Personal Umbrella Insurance

Personal Umbrella Insurance in Pennsylvania

A personal umbrella policy (PUP) extends liability coverage over your auto, home, motorcycle, renters, condo and other types of primary policies that include liability coverage — extra protection against devastating claims and judgments.

Underlying policies must keep minimum liability limits for umbrella eligibility.

If home, auto, or other primary limits fall below what your umbrella carrier requires, a coverage gap can leave you paying the difference out of pocket. We help you set — and keep — the right underlying structure.

Please Note: We offer insurance coverage in Pennsylvania only.

What is a Personal Umbrella Policy?

A PUP is designed to extend the overall liability coverage provided by your auto, homeowners’, motorcycle, renters’, or condominium policy — acting as an “umbrella” over and above those coverages. Simply stated, it helps protect you against devastating claims and judgments.

How a PUP works

A personal umbrella typically kicks in after the limits of your primary policy (auto, home, etc.) are exhausted — subject to policy exclusions. That helps protect current assets and future earnings from large liability judgments.

02

Can you afford to be without one?

People work hard for their homes and possessions. Without umbrella protection, a single accident or lawsuit can put what you’ve earned — and future wages — at risk, even if you carry “adequate” primary coverage.

03

Low-cost catastrophic protection

Even households with modest incomes can be sued. A personal umbrella is often a relatively low-cost way to add million-dollar liability limits above your primary policies.

Underlying liability limits — eligibility & coverage gaps

Key point: Umbrella carriers require minimum liability limits on the policies underneath (home, auto, motorcycle, rental property, watercraft, RV, and similar). Those minimums are typical examples only and are carrier-dependent — they are not a guarantee of what every market will accept. If you drop or fail to maintain the required underlying limits, a coverage gap can open and you may pay that difference yourself.

Underlying policyTypical minimum examples (carrier-dependent)
Personal autoOften about $250,000 / $500,000 / $100,000 (BI each person / BI each accident / PD) or about $300,000 combined single limit (CSL). Some carriers require higher (e.g. 300/500/100 or 500 CSL).
Homeowners / renters / condoOften about $300,000 personal liability per occurrence.
Residential rental propertyOften about $300,000 liability per occurrence (per location / per carrier schedule).
MotorcycleOften around $100,000 / $300,000 / $100,000 or $300,000 CSL — varies widely by carrier.
RV / motor homeOften similar to auto (e.g. 250/500/100 or higher CSL) — confirm with the umbrella market.
Watercraft / PWCOften about $300,000 (sometimes higher for larger vessels) — size and type matter.

Figures above reflect common published carrier guidelines (including PA markets that commonly reference 250/500/100 or $300k CSL for auto and ~$300k for home). Always verify the schedule of underlying insurance on your umbrella declarations. Ask us to review your current declarations so eligibility and gap risk are clear before you bind or renew.

What if an accident happens?

Even with solid primary coverage, property damage, injuries, and legal fees can exceed those limits. These real-world style scenarios show why an umbrella matters.

Graduation party

A guest slips and falls, causing paralysis and brain injury — or leaves intoxicated and causes an auto accident. Host liability and auto limits can be exhausted quickly.

Recreational baseball

An errant throw strikes a pedestrian in the face, requiring reconstructive surgery and causing permanent disfigurement. Injury claims can far exceed a standard homeowners liability limit.

Distracted driving

A daughter reaches for a cell phone, swerves into an oncoming SUV, and disables the other driver and a passenger. Auto liability limits may not cover the full judgment.

Personal Umbrella FAQ

What does a personal umbrella cover?

It generally provides excess liability above eligible underlying policies such as auto, homeowners, renters, condo, and often motorcycle or other scheduled exposures. It is not a replacement for those primary policies, and it is subject to exclusions in the umbrella form.

When does the umbrella pay?

Typically after primary policy limits are exhausted for a covered claim — subject to the umbrella’s terms and exclusions. Defense costs and judgment amounts beyond primary limits are common reasons people buy a PUP.

Why do underlying limits matter so much?

Carriers require minimum liability on the policies underneath. If those limits are too low — or drop mid-term — you may lose eligibility or create a gap between what the primary pays and where the umbrella attaches. That gap is usually your responsibility.

What umbrella limit should I choose?

Common starting points are $1 million, with $2M, $3M, and $5M+ also available from many markets. The right number depends on assets, future earnings, drivers, and exposures (pools, dogs, rentals, watercraft). Tell us a target on the form and we’ll recommend options.

Do youthful drivers or violations affect umbrella pricing?

Yes. Drivers under 25, violations, and accidents are important underwriting factors. Share them on the quote form so we can match markets accurately.
